Part One: The best part of moving is when it’s over.
Are your house and home on the move? Having “relocated” myself, pets and belongings 8 times over the past 8 years, I felt to compelled to offer some inspiration or at least a hopeful glance towards the light at the end of the tunnel, or the highway. We live in such a mobile world these days, and isn’t it wonderful, too? Can you imagine the oldie days when just a trip to a city 60 miles away would have constituted days of planning and preparation, a 2-day trip by horse or buggy (or both) just to get there, not to mention perhaps preceding months of correspondence exchanged with whomever you would be visiting or otherwise regarding lodging arrangements while there.
And, then there is Today. We think NOTHING of hopping in the car and driving half that distance just to go to a restaurant or movie. Or work. But, back to the “moving” part. Maybe you’re a backaching member of the D-I-Y group, which entails packing everything yourself, loading it yourself - whether into a pod or onto a truck - and unloading and unpacking. Or more fortunate folks, whose employer may fund the relocation or can afford to hire movers, will have their household packed, sealed and delivered, and even unpacked at the new digs.
Having experienced practically all of the above and some combinations of each, I will assure the “newbies” and commiserate with you who’ve already been through a relocating experience, that it will definitely TEST your relationship(s).
That is, even at best and at worst, you will undoubtedly discover something new about your spouse, significant other, child, pet, friends, neighbors, and even passersby - as your relocation “unfolds.” It is easy to become the Ralph and Alice Kramden of the neighborhood as you face the moving challenge.
Discussion to continue in Part II. And, if you are not familiar with The Honeymooners, we’ll talk about that, too!
